Definition
Benchmarking can be defined as

  • comparing the organisation to others in order to be able to meaure performance, strengths and weaknesses
  • identifying the methods, processes, products and services which are better or different in other organisations
  • learning from experiences and procedures employed by such organisations

Purpose
The purpose with benchmarking

  • to increase levels of quality and efficiency to attain "best practice" - the highest level of achievement in relation to resources to hand and the performance of other organisation
  • to be the best within those areas perceived to be stategically important - and not all area
